The Culturally Significant 'Nitu' Prawns of Vatulele

The conservation of the red prawns, known as ura damudamu or ura buta, of Vatulele stands as one of the Pacific’s most powerful examples of cultural, community-led, and spiritually governed conservation. Living in rare anchialine pools found on only about thirty islands across the Indo-Pacific, these fragile and scientifically significant species are protected through a system where ecological importance, cultural identity, customary authority, and spiritual obligation are inseparable.

This extended paper continues the broad articulation on the intrinsic relationship between indigenous knowledge (iTaukei traditional ecological, cultural, and spiritual epistemologies) and indigenous or customary governance in Fiji. Using the philosophical metaphor "The valley and the mountains are one," demonstrates that environmental, spatial, and social knowledge in Fiji cannot be separated from customary governance structures.
